Johnny Lee (link) has done some really neat research. One of his projects is head tracking using off the shelf parts, specifically a Wiimote and light bar thingie, which I became aware of a few weeks ago. Check it out here. Basically it changes the image on the screen of your TV to make it look like you're looking through a window into the virtual world, as it would look through an actual window from that point of view.
